I first saw this movie when it first came out in 2003. At the time, I never really put two and two togehter regarding consumer behavior in the movie. But seeing it again for the first time in years and seeing it through different eyes, I can relate how consumer behavior has played a role in this movie.
With the view of the dysfunctional family driving up to New York City, they are shown going to pop culture areas (i.e. Krispy Kreme, bagels, or the mom going to roll a joint to help ease her pain of breast cancer). The boyfriend is fratically trying to go and find a suit so he can look presentable meeting his girfriend's family. Something that I maybe doing next month and him meeting my family at graduation in May. I can relate to his nervousness in meeting a loved ones family. Meanwhile, April is going through a time time once she realized that her oven is broken and she can't make the traditional Thanksgiving meal for her family. (Something that I have NEVER done because I am such a bad cook that I have burned Mac and Cheese and popcorn...YES)! She also realized the importance of family and how precisous they can be and she does make friends with her neighbors in the process.
How the movie can relate to the book is because they are showing brand names that the family is going into (product placement) and how they can interact with brands. Such as the family eating donuts.
Very glad that I got to see this movie once again because it has been a while since I have seen it and I will enjoy movies on a more personal level after completing Consumer Behavior (hopefully with a C or better).
