According to our book, "consumer behavior is the study of the process involved when individuals or groups select, purchase, use, or dispose of products, services, ideas, or experiences to satisfy needs and desire" (pg 33). With this in mind, marketers play a significant role in our view of the world and how we live in it. Companies want consumers to wait in line for HOURS to save some money on items that we may or may not need, but we feel that we must go out there and buy said product. Why? That is something that I feel we as marketers want to find out.
I also think that Black Friday and all of the retail stores bidding for our dollars and time from the night of Thanksgiving all the way to Christmas Eve. Just like the political ads for this election year, we are bombarded with sale ads for Wal Mart, Target, Kohls, and JcPenny, just to name a few. The main objective of these ads are to tell us what hours they are open and how much money you can save on elections, toys, or clothes for your loved ones come Christmas morning.
When I was growing up, it was Friday and all the sales started around 5 am, last year sales started around 3 am, and this year, stores were doing specials on Thanksgiving at 8 pm. I can't believe that companies and employees are putting up with this because Thanksgiving is a day to give thanks for all of the positive aspects of your life, not the wants or desires.
Consumer behavior and Black Fridaty are very interesting of the brief topics that I have mentioned. Major retail stores are going to advertise how cheap/bargain a product of theirs is compared to every other sale they have during the year.
Marketers are telling consumers that the latest gadget is (tablet), or the latest "it" toy is, or how cheap a quality sweater is that you can buy for your aunt Sally.
